What is PureBooks?

PureBooks is a book safety scanner for families. Scan any book barcode and get an instant colour-coded rating based on the content. We check for explicit content, LGBT themes, violence, drug use, and other content that families may wish to be aware of before reading.

How are books rated?

Ratings come from three sources, in order of priority:

1. PureBooks database — books manually reviewed by our team. These show a ✦ verified badge.

2. AI analysis — if not in our database, Claude AI analyses the title, description and categories.

3. Keyword classifier — a backup system that checks for known content keywords.

Scanning books is always free. A subscription unlocks your private reading diary:

PureBooks ("we", "us", "our") is a book safety rating service accessible at purebooks.app. By using PureBooks, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.

2. Use of the Service

PureBooks is provided for personal, non-commercial use. You must not misuse the service, attempt to access it by means other than through our interface, or use it to harm others.

3. Accuracy of Ratings

Book ratings are provided as guidance only. While we use AI analysis and manual review, ratings may not always be accurate. We accept no liability for decisions made based on our ratings. We recommend always previewing books yourself, especially for children.

4. Subscriptions & Payments

Paid subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. You may cancel at any time. No refunds are issued for partial months. Prices are in GBP and include VAT where applicable.

5. User Content

You are responsible for content you add to your reading diary. We reserve the right to remove content that violates these terms.

6. Intellectual Property

Book cover images and descriptions are sourced from Google Books and Open Library APIs. PureBooks does not claim ownership of third-party content.

7. Limitation of Liability

PureBooks is provided "as is". We are not liable for any damages arising from use of this service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid in the last 12 months.

1. What data we collect

We collect your email address and password when you register. We store the books you add to your reading diary, including title, author, ISBN, and your reading status. We do not collect your real name unless you provide it.

2. How we use your data

Your data is used solely to provide the PureBooks service — account login, storing your reading diary, and managing your subscription. We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

3. Third party services

We use Supabase for secure data storage, Stripe for payment processing, and Anthropic Claude for AI book analysis. Book information is retrieved from Google Books and Open Library. Each has their own privacy policy.

4. Data retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us.

5. Cookies

We use only essential cookies required for login sessions. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

6. Your rights (GDPR)

7. Security

Passwords are encrypted. Data is stored securely on Supabase servers with row-level security. Payment data is handled entirely by Stripe and never stored by us.

PureBooks ("we", "us", "our") is a book safety rating service operated by an independent publisher. Our service helps families identify books containing content that may be unsuitable for children, based on our own values and editorial judgement.

Scanning books and viewing safety ratings is completely free and always will be. No account is required to scan a book.

When you create an account, you receive a 3-day free trial of the reading diary feature. No payment information is required during the trial. At the end of the trial, diary access will stop unless you subscribe. Your scanned books and ratings remain visible — only the diary feature requires a subscription.

Diary access is available on a monthly subscription basis. Prices are £1.99/month (1 diary), £2.99/month (3 diaries), or £4.99/month (5 diaries). Payments are processed securely by Stripe. You can cancel at any time — cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

Our ratings reflect our own editorial values and are provided in good faith. We cannot guarantee every book is rated correctly — descriptions from publishers and book databases may be incomplete. If you believe a rating is wrong, please use the "Report a rating" feature. We review all reports and update our database accordingly.

We store your email address, name, and reading diary entries to provide the service. We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not show you advertisements. Your reading diary is private — only you can see it. We use Supabase for secure data storage.

You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing hello@purebooks.app. We will process your request within 30 days.

PureBooks provides ratings as a guide only. We are not liable for any decisions made based on our ratings. Parents and guardians remain responsible for the content their children access.

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of PureBooks after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
